There’s nothing better than coming home to a warm house during the colder months. Similarly, coming home to an unexpectedly cold house is very unwelcome. It is not uncommon for heating systems to fail or stop working to their full potential, but it can be difficult to identify the fault straight away.
This article aims to provide helpful tips and advice to help you identify and resolve any central heating problems.
1. Check Your Thermostat
If you have an older boiler, your thermostat may need altering. As boilers age, thermostats get less accurate and temperatures can be easily misread. This problem can be rectified by hiring an engineer to clean and recalibrate the thermostat, but it also is worth checking your local DIY store to their range of devices.
2. Programmers / Time Switches
It sounds simple, but making sure that the clock dial on your programmer is working will keep your heating working correctly. A lot of central heating controls are clock-driven, so if the clock stops the heating timings will be thrown out of sync.
3. Keep Pipes Warm
During the cold months, the pipes throughout your home are susceptible to freezing, which can cause blockages which back up to the boiler, thus causing it to shut down. Your boiler will show some signs of failure if freezing does occur, including a fault message on the boiler’s display and unusual bubbling or gurgling sounds.
4. Radiators Need Bleeding
Your radiator can stop working if there is air trapped inside it. Without radiators, you’ll notice your house gets very cold. Bleeding your radiator is a simple process; simply locate the valve at the end of the radiator, turn the valve with a radiator key until you hear air coming out, and then once water starts to drip from the valve, tighten the valve again. Once this process is complete, check your boiler pressure to be sure it has worked correctly.
These problems can be solved relatively easily, and often without professional help. However, sometimes it is safer to consult a professional instead of carrying out any heating maintenance on your own.
