What Is Power Flushing?

Deep Cleaning for Your Central Heating System

A power flush is a high-pressure chemical cleaning process that clears blockages caused by:

  • Rust and sludge build-up
  • Magnetite (black iron oxide)
  • Limescale and air pockets
  • System debris from installation or repair

This service is also commonly referred to as:

  • Flushing a central heating system
  • Boiler power flush
  • Radiator power flush
  • Central heating flush

Our process uses industry-approved machines and chemicals, delivering powerful cleaning without causing damage to pipework or components. On completion, we rebalance the system, add corrosion inhibitor and issue a written condition report — so you have full documentation of the work carried out.

Frequently Asked Questions — Power Flush London

How long does a power flush take?

Most residential power flushes take between 4 and 8 hours depending on system size, number of radiators and severity of contamination. Larger or heavily fouled systems may require a full day. We will give you a time estimate when we survey the system. Commercial and communal systems are quoted on a bespoke basis following a site visit.

Do I need a power flush before a new boiler?

Most boiler manufacturers strongly recommend a power flush before installing a new boiler — and many make it a condition of their warranty. Installing a new boiler into a contaminated system will circulate existing sludge through the new components, causing premature wear and reducing efficiency from day one. If your installer has recommended a power flush before installation, it is worth doing. We can combine the flush and boiler installation into a single coordinated visit.

How often should you power flush a central heating system?

Most systems benefit from a power flush every 5 to 6 years. If a magnetic filter is installed after the flush, it will capture future debris and extend the interval between flushes — often to 8 to 10 years. Systems in hard water areas, older properties or those without inhibitor in the system may need attention sooner.

Is a power flush worth it?

Yes — in most cases. A contaminated system can lose up to 25% of its heating efficiency, meaning your boiler is working harder and costing more to run. A power flush typically pays for itself in energy savings within 1 to 2 heating seasons. For landlords and property managers, it also reduces the risk of boiler breakdowns and emergency callouts — particularly during winter.

Can a power flush damage old pipes?

A professionally conducted power flush will not damage sound pipework. However, if pipework is already corroded or in poor condition, the cleaning process may reveal pre-existing weaknesses. Our engineers assess system condition before starting and will advise if they have any concerns. We do not proceed with a flush where we believe there is a significant risk of damage.

Do you provide a certificate or report after a power flush?

Yes — every VHL power flush includes a written condition report on completion, detailing the work carried out, water quality results (where tested) and inhibitor levels. This can be shared with your letting agent, housing association or used as evidence of maintenance for insurance purposes.
